FAQ
Citizenship Test - Frequently Asked Questions
Short, practical answers based on publicly available IRCC and Government of Canada citizenship test information. CitizenshipPrep.ca is an independent study platform, not an official government service.
Is the Canadian citizenship test hard to pass?
The test is very manageable when you study consistently, but it should not be treated as a quick memory quiz. You need to understand topics from Discover Canada, including rights and responsibilities, history, geography, government, laws, symbols, and the economy.
Our simulator helps by combining realistic exam-style questions with timing, review, and setup practice. It does not use real IRCC test questions and it cannot guarantee a pass.
What score do I need on the citizenship test?
The official test has 20 questions. You need at least 15 correct answers, which is 75%, to pass. CitizenshipPrep.ca uses the same 15 out of 20 practice threshold in the simulator so your study sessions feel realistic.
What happens if I do not pass the test?
IRCC states that applicants have up to 3 chances to pass during the 30-day test period. If all test attempts are unsuccessful, the next step can be a hearing with a citizenship official.
In this practice platform, missed questions go into your Mistake Bank so you can review weak areas before trying another simulator attempt.
How long do I have to complete the test?
The online citizenship test is 45 minutes long. Once the timer starts, it cannot be paused, and the test is submitted automatically when time runs out. The CitizenshipPrep.ca simulator follows that timing pattern for practice.
Should I study Discover Canada before taking practice tests?
Discover Canada is the official study guide, and IRCC says the test questions are based on information in that guide. Reading it carefully is essential.
Practice questions can help you check retention, pacing, and weak topics, but they should support the guide rather than replace it.
Can I take the Canadian citizenship test online?
Most applicants are invited to take the test online unless an accommodation or different format is needed. The online test can be taken from anywhere, but you must follow the instructions in your invitation and meet the device, browser, webcam, and environment requirements.
Do I need perfect English or French to pass?
No. The citizenship test itself is not designed to assess English or French language skills. It is offered in English or French and checks citizenship knowledge.
If you are invited to an interview, a citizenship officer may consider how well you communicate in one of Canada’s official languages.
